ConclusionIn this chapter, we have described the BEYTrans prototype, an environmentfor helping online volunteer translators to produce high-quality translations ofvarious types of documents. The first version has been implemented, and hasbeen experimentally used by the DEMGOL project. We are also planning to haveit tested by the FTEXT multilingualisation project (a Japanese project that makesfree high school texts) (FTEXT 2007). Though a detailed analysis of user feedbackis yet to be carried out, all in all we have had a very favorable reaction fromthe DEMGOL participants who have used BEYTrans for their translation work(DEMGOL 2007).We hope BEYTrans will provide a way for all communities involved in volunteertranslation to improve their skills and enhance quality. On the technical side,we have used the Wiki technology to develop collaborative and open editing functionson the Web, and we have integrated the management of translatable unitsand language resources using various XML annotation systems, sometimes addingoriginal specifications necessary to our system. This work continues, with a viewto provide online volunteer translators with important components for producingfast but high-quality translations into many languages, and also to “bootstrap” thesystem so that translators can manage language resources (dictionaries and TMs)using the same tool.
