Chapter 9. BEYTrans 1456. BEYTrans: A collaborative environment for helping volunteer translators6.1 Translator scenarioThe environment is open to all volunteers on the Web. Any user/translator canupload web documents and then share the translation work with others by exploitinglanguage resources. Documents to be translated first undergo a process oftext extraction that consists of detecting sentence boundaries and identifying TUs(Walker 2001). The language of the source document has to be specified (in the future,we might use a language detector). For each uploaded document, BEYTranscreates a new document, its translation companion (TC), in the TMX-C XML format(TMX for Collaboration), which contains all TUs of its corresponding sourcedocument (Fig. 3). The TC is used for collaborative translation: source and targettranslation segments are stored in it. Before starting translation, the companiondocument is pre-processed using the local translation memory and available MTsystems to get one or more pre-translations or suggestions for the TUs (in theselected target language).Translators read the result in the target language, possibly synchronised withthesource(theoriginalTUsarereplacedbythe“best”pre-translationsintheoriginal document), and they switch from reading to editing mode to performtranslation. The online translation editor has an Excel-like interface where allsource TUs are displayed in parallel. For example, translators can add and removecolumns and rows during translation.During the translation, the editor makes suggestions by computing similarityscores between the currently selected TU and the TUs stored in the Central TranslationMemory (CTM), which contains all the previous translations. Translatorscan, however, adjust the rate of similarity. If a match is detected, translators can selectthe target segment and insert it in the active editing area. Furthermore, whena source segment is selected, the editor automatically searches existing communitydictionaries and displays the translation(s) of words detected in the sourcesegment. After finishing translation, BEYTrans creates a new version of the TCand sends it to the repository. As it is saved in Wiki mode, it is easy to follow themodifications done in previous versions. This enhances the efficiency of collaborativetranslation, as translators have a simple and concrete mechanism to checkmodifications and view previous versions.In the following sub-section, we outline the technical solution for the implementationof BEYTrans. Different questions related to document management,the editor and language resources will then be addressed.6.2 Translation modules and language help6.2.1 Document segmentationThe uploaded documents are subject to multilingual text extraction and segmentationfor TU boundary detection which allows construction of the TC and insertionof TUs in the central TM (Walker et al. 2001). We have exploited the efficiency ofLingPipe tools (LingPipe 2007), which deal with sentence-boundary and languageunit detection (e.g., named-entity detection, etc.). This tool can be extended tosupport additional languages and trained resources for more precision, but translatorscan exploit the Excel-like editor to improve the automatic segmentation andgenerate new segments manually.However, the detected TUs are managed in the TC format, which contains allsegments of all languages in which the document has been translated. Translatorscan display all TUs in parallel format or select those of specific language pairs.The TUs are not only processed at the segmentation stage; it is important alsoto note that once the translation is finished, new segments (added, deleted or updated)are re-structured in a new version of the translation companion (in TMX-Cformat). After each translation, the new translation companion of the current documentcontaining the new TUs is sent back to the repository. Accordingly, thesesegments are also sent to the CTM, in order to make them available to translatorsduring the translation of future documents.
