Together with rapid advances <strong>in</strong> telecommunications it wasthe basis <strong>for</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g databases and global <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation access networks such asthe Internet. Visualisation techniques and constantly <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g storage capacitiesled to multimedia applications.This <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly powerful technology base has then been comb<strong>in</strong>ed withterm<strong>in</strong>ology management practices <strong>in</strong> the <strong>for</strong>m of termbases, with multil<strong>in</strong>gualcommunication and translation requirements as well as with cultural adaptationstrategies <strong>in</strong> the <strong>for</strong>m of localisation methods. <strong>Language</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g applied totranslation <strong>in</strong> the <strong>for</strong>m of computer-assisted translation, translation memory systems,and mach<strong>in</strong>e translation, have recently been comb<strong>in</strong>ed with localisationmethods and term<strong>in</strong>ology management <strong>for</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tegrated workbenches.On the economic level, <strong>in</strong>ternational trade and commerce have <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>glyrequired cross-cultural management and <strong>in</strong>ternational market<strong>in</strong>g strategies tailoredtowards cultural conventions <strong>in</strong> local markets. This trend towards customisationof products has generated personalised products and services that are basedon specific user profiles, customer satisfaction and quality management schemes.The emergence of <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation and knowledge management systems has beenanother key development <strong>in</strong> recent years.
