Figure 2. Distribution of organochlorinated pesticides in mussel samplesDDT and their metabolitesThe concentrations for DDTs were presented in Figure 3. Mussels of 2007 year havethe high concentration of DDT and its metabolite products. ∑DDT (o,p’-DDE; p,p’-DDE; p,p’-DDD and p,p’-DDT) was quantified in mussel tissues inconcentrations between 45.35 and 448.7.31 ng/g fresh weight. Range of DDT levelsfound for each year was the same with total of organochlorinated pesticides inmussel samples. Levels of DDTs for years 2006 and 2007 were higher. It was notedthat DDT contribute was higher than its metabolites for year 2007. This could bebecause of new DDTs arrival from mismanagements of stocks of this pesticide.p,p’-DDT was found in 93% of samples collect in concentration between 0-75.7ng/g. p,p’-DDE was present in all samples, enormous contaminant too in each ofthem. Concentration of p,p’-DDE was in an interval between 9.04-175.13 ng/g. Thebanning of DDT use after 90’ in Albania and it degradation process are both factorthat explain fact that p,p’-DDE was found in elevated concentration. Note that p,p’-DDE has a great potential for magnification in the food chain and it is verypersistent between other breakdown products of DDT. Unfortunately it was toxicitymuch higher than DDT. The low DDT/DDE ratios (exclude the found levels foryear 2007) recorded in the current study indicates the lack of recent use for DDTformulations. Levels of other metabolites p,p’-DDD and o,p’-DDE were lower thanp,p’-DDE. Their levels were elevated for years 2006 and 2007. Degradation processand their stability were the main factors. DDTs levels were higher than reportedconcentrations in other study for biota samples in Adriatic Sea.AcademyPublish.org - The Impact of Pesticides231
