ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS IN APPLICATION OF GYPSUM OFSERO-CLEANING INSTALLATIONS FROM “MARITSA IZTOK 2”THERMO-ELECTRICAL STATION FOR MELIORATION PURPOSESON DISTURBED AGRICULTURAL LANDSIVAN DIMITROV, SVILEN RAYKOV 11 Shumen University “Ep.K.Preslavski”, е-mail:rajkov_svilen@abv.bgKey words: waste gypsum, soil reclamation, melioration of salt-affected soils198ABSTRACTWe have carried out investigations in two directions for application of waste gypsum from SPI(Sulphur-purifying installation of “Maritza-Iztok” thermo-electrical station.-as environmental suitable substrate for reclamation of disturbed agricultural lands-for its use as chemical meliorant of salty soilsThe industrial development and intensification of production increase significantly thepollution of the environment. The soil contaminates most often. This is due to the large quantities ofwaste resulting from different industries.Very often, these waste products are wasted in the area of the factories, hinders theirfunctioning and pollute the environment. In “Maritsa-Iztok 2” EAD Thermo-Electrical Station 600,000 tonsproduction gypsum are obtained per year from gas-purification which is depositedon fertile agricultural land rather than to be recovered. Sero-Cleaning Installations /SCI / after 7 th and 8 th - energy units, and since October 2008 and after 1 st and 2 ndenergy units are designed to purify the flue gases of sulfur dioxide and sulfurtrioxide to protect the air clean and to prevent its content over the pollution limitsfor their content. The resulting calcium sulfate (gypsum) is transported anddisposed with other solid waste (slag and ashes) in the existing disposal site № 1 ofthe TES-2 and then in “Staroselets” waste bank. Due to the exhaustion of thecapacity of “Staroselets” waste bank at the present the solid waste is deposited inthe “United northern waste banks”.The problems highlighted are not only of regional but also of nationalimportance, in view of the affection of one of the most fertile parts of our country. This requires duly seeking technologies and methods to restore disturbed areas, topropose options for safe disposal of gypsum of sero-cleaning installations in the“United northern waste banks” and for other purposes.Studies were conducted in both directions for ascertaining the possibilitiesfor use of waste gypsum: 1 / its inclusion as a component of an ecological suitablesubstrate for reclamation of damaged areas in order to reduce the exploitation costsof its safe disposal, and 2. / its use as chemical meliorant of salted soils. The purpose of the present study is to present the results of the chemicalcharacteristics, one of the most important indicators of restricting the use of
