arising from the same point. Flowers pale purple, tinged<br />

with yellow or green, | in. diameter, single on drooping,<br />

usually axillary stalks. Calyx cleft nearly to the base, segments<br />

leaf-like. Corolla bell-shaped; lobes 5, short, broad,<br />

spreading. Style longer than the corolla; stigma green:<br />

Berry globose, | in. diameter, purple-black, surrounded at the<br />

base by the enlarged spreading calyx.<br />

Flowers. August, September.<br />

Locality. Gulinarg, edge of woods and margs, above<br />

7,500 ft., common.<br />

Distribution. W. Himalaya, 6,000-11,000 ft., from Kashmir<br />

to Simla, W. Asia, Europe.<br />

given in honour of St. Veronica, or it may be a corruption of<br />

Betonica, more correctly VeUonica, which was united with Veronica<br />

by former writers.)<br />

The flowers are never yellow in this genus.<br />
