Polygonum polystachyum, Wall. Many-spiked Polygonum.<br />

Shrubby, 3-6 ft. higb. Stem angled, hairy branches<br />

; grooved.<br />

Leaves 4-9 by li-3i in., stalked or the upper nearly stalkless,<br />

oblong-lance-shaped, long-pointed, upper surface hairless or<br />

thinly hairy, the lower softly and densely hairy, especially on<br />

the midrib and nerves. Stipules tubular, very long, pointed,<br />

hairy, strongly nerved. Flowers white or tinged with pink,<br />

in terminal, usually erect panicles, 6-18 in. long. Bracts flat.<br />

Perianth 5-parted, \ in. diameter; segments spreading, the<br />

2 outer narrow, the 3 inner much broader. Stamens 8.<br />

Styles 3, free nearly to the base. Nut 3-angled, pale brown,<br />

not tightly enclosed in the perianth.<br />

Locality. Temperate region.<br />

Distribution. From Kashmir to Sikkim, up to 14,000 ft.,<br />

Afghanistan.<br />

Polygonum rumicifolium, Eoyle.<br />

Dock-leafed Polygonum.<br />

Root stout, perennial. Stems 6-18 in. high, hairless or<br />

sparsely hairy, very robust, simple, pale, grooved. Leaves<br />

3-5 by li-3 in., stalked, broadly egg- or egg-heart-shaped, fleshy,<br />

green, margin even or wavy, nerves very slender ;<br />

stalk i-1 in.<br />

long, stout. Stipules large, lax, hairless. Flowers in small<br />

axillary and terminal, dense-flowered panicles. Flowers<br />

green, i-1 in. Perianth cleft to near the wedge-shaped base,<br />

segments almost equal, rounded, spreading. Nut very<br />

broadly egg-shaped, sharply 3-angled, about as long as the<br />

perianth, pale.<br />

Locality. Subalpine region.<br />

Distrihition.'From Kashmir to Nepal, 10,000-14,000 ft.<br />

Polygonum serrulatum,<br />

Lagasca.<br />

(Serrulatum means finely toothed.)<br />

Stems 2-4 ft. high, slender, smooth, often reddish. Leaves<br />

almost stalkless, drying green, 3-5 by i-8 in. linear, sharppointed,<br />

smooth or with a few scattered hairs on the upper<br />

side and the midrib, the margins usually ciliate, base slightly<br />

tapering, rounded. Stipules up to li in. long, hairy, the<br />

mouth truncate and ciliate with long stiff bristles which are<br />

nearly as long as the tube. Flowers in slender, .erect racemes,<br />

f-2 in. long which form panicles. Flower-stalks short.
