(Auriculatum means ear-shaped, alluding to the basal lobes<br />

of the leaves.)<br />

Stems twining, hairless except a line of hairs running down<br />

between the joints. Leaves broadly egg-shaped or egg-lanceshaped,<br />

long-pointed, deeply heart-shaped, 3J-7 by 2-5 in. ;<br />

stalks with a pair of leaf-like, basal lobes. Flowers forming<br />

long-stalked cymes. Flowers many, i-J in. diameter,<br />

yellow-green, Calyx mur.h shorter than the corolla. Corolla<br />

hairy within. Corona much shorter than the corolla, cupshaped,<br />

bearing 5 scales near the base within, deeply 5-lobed,<br />

lobes free. Fruit consisting of 2 follicles which are 4 by J in.<br />

long and straight. Seeds i in. long, flat, flask-shaped, with a<br />

toothed broader end.<br />

dry stony hill-side, about 7,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Temperate Himalaya, from Kashmir to<br />

Sikkim,<br />

6,000-12,000 ft.<br />

Cynanchum Heydei, Hook. f.<br />

Twining, nearly hairless. Leaves lance-shaped, long-pointed,<br />

deeply heart-shaped, basal lobes long, bent inwards, often overlapping.<br />

Flowers forming slender- stalked corymbs. Corolla<br />

hairless. Corona bell- shaped, mouth with 5 long awl-shaped<br />

teeth projecting beyond the corolla, each tooth with a short<br />

process at its inner base.<br />

Locality. Ladakh.<br />

Distribution. Apparently endemic in Kashmir.<br />

Cynanchum acutum, Linn.<br />

Twining, hairless or nearly so. Leaves 1-5 in. long, base<br />

broad, 3-lobed or halbert-shaped, or halbert-heart-shaped ;<br />

on<br />

the whole linear or lance-shaped, long-pointed, basal lobes up<br />

to 1^ in. long. Flowers forming umbels or corymbs, stalks<br />

hairy. Sepals egg-shaped, usually hairy. Corolla i to f in.<br />

diameter, hairless, segments egg-shaped-oblong. Corona very<br />

variable, sometimes quite simple and cleft deeply into<br />

triangular, erect or spreading lobes ;<br />

sometimes cup-shaped<br />

and 5-lobed or with 2-5 awl-shaped lobes. Follicles 4-6 in.<br />

long, J-i in. diameter, straight or slightly curved, narrowed<br />

into a slender point. Seeds J in. long, flat.<br />

Locality. At altitudes of 11,000-13,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Kashmir, Afghanistan, Central and W. Asia,<br />

Mediterranean.
