Locality. Gulmarg, woods and margs, about 8,000 ft.,<br />

common.<br />

Distribution. W. Himalaya, Afghanistan, and westwards<br />

to Spain.<br />

Scrophularia himalensis, Koyle (including S. polyantha, Eoyle).<br />

Stems 3-4 ft. high, stout below. Leaves egg- or lanceshaped,<br />

2-8 in. long, often heart-shaped, sharp-pointed, sometimes<br />

lobed at the base ;<br />

stalk about i-1 in. lon^. Cymes<br />

long-stalked, few-flowered, loosely spreading, sometimes<br />

forming a large panicle. Flowers greenish. Sepals 5, rounded<br />

with a membranous margin, rs in. long, half as long as the<br />

very broad short corolla. Corolla-lobes 5, the two upper ones<br />

much longer than the 2 lateral. Stamens 4 in unequal pairs,<br />

far protruding staminode spoon -shaped. Style filiform.<br />

Distribution. W. temperate Himalaya, from Kashmir to<br />

Kumaon, 4,000-11,000 ft.<br />

(Lucida means clear, bright, shining.)<br />

Stems 2-3 ft. high, obscurely 4-angled. Leaves 1-2 in. long,<br />

once or twice pinnately cut ; segments spreading, horizontal,<br />

very unequal, oblong-egg-shaped or lance-shaped, toothed.<br />

Cymes few-flowered, short-stalked, forming long panicles ;<br />

flower-stalks very short ;<br />

bracts linear. Sepals rounded with<br />

a broad membranous margin, half as long as the corolla.<br />

Corolla i-i in. broad, the 2 upper lobes longer than the others.<br />

Stamens 4 in unequal pairs, hardly protruding, staminode<br />

rounded or kidney-shaped. Capsule globose, pointed. Seeds<br />

oblong.<br />
