Distribution. From the Pontic Mountains through the<br />
Caucasus, Turkestan, Afghanistan and Himalaya, to Yunnan,<br />
Altai Mts., Baikal region, Dahuria.<br />
Note. This species as understood here includes the<br />
varieties purpurea, Moorcroftiana, macrocarpa and lineariloba<br />
of Primula Stuartii, Hook, f., in the Flora of British India.<br />
Primula Stuartii, Wall., does not seem to occur W. of<br />
Garhwal.<br />

Quite glabrous, not mealy. Leaves appearing shortly after<br />
the flowers, all radical, simple, 2-5 in. long, egg-shaped-oblong<br />
or inversely lance-shaped, or spoon-shaped, blunt or sharppointed,<br />
stalkless or almost so, green and glabrous on both<br />
surfaces, margin with closely set teeth, midrib broad.<br />
Flowering stem as long as or longer than the leaves, robust,<br />
in dwarfed specimens often not higher than 1 in. Bracts<br />
lance-shaped, long-pointed. Flowers bright or pale rose-red,<br />
5 to many, forming lax umbels, stalks usually short, about<br />
I in. long, but very variable. Calyx 5-lobed to the middle,<br />
i-i in. long, lobes triangular, sharp-pointed. Corolla-tube<br />
longer than the calyx, lobes 5, 2-fid, sometimes toothed, limb<br />
flat. Capsule globose, enclosed in the calyx seeds pale,<br />

sharply angled.<br />
Flowers. May to September, according to altitude.<br />
