Salvia asperata,<br />

(Asperata means rough or harsh.)<br />

A harsh, coarse herb. Stems stout, erect, glandular-hairy.<br />

Leaves 3-6 by 2-3 in., stalked, oblong-egg-shaped, heartshaped,<br />

crenate, very much wrinkled. Flower- whorls distant,<br />

6-10-flowered. Calyx broadly bell-shaped, stiff -hairy, rigid,<br />

J in. long, teeth spinous, upper lip with 3 teeth. Corolla f in.<br />

long, white ;<br />

tube short, slender ;<br />

throat shortly inflated ;<br />

upper lip long, narrow, arched, lower shorter. Nutlets rV in.<br />

long, almost globose.<br />

Locality. Has been found between 5,000 and 6,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Kashmir, endemic.<br />

Salvia dumetorum, Andrz.<br />

(Dumetum means a thicket, alluding to the predilection of this<br />

plant for brushwood.)<br />

Stems herbaceous, erect, robust, hairy, 1-3 ft. high, much<br />

branched. Lower leaves long-stalked, egg-shaped or oblongheart-shaped,<br />

doubly crenate, wrinkled above; stem-leaves few,<br />

stalkless, broadly heart-egg-shaped. Flower- whorls 6-flowered,<br />

distant. Calyx almost stalkless, bell-ehaped, J in. long,<br />

glandular-hairy, teeth of upper lip very short. Corolla J-f in.<br />

long, blue, tube as long as the calyx, throat inflated.<br />

Locality. Found by Falconer at about 6,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Vodhynia, Podolia, Altai.<br />

A robust, tall, densely and softly woolly herb. Stems<br />

usually many from the root, 12-18 in. high, simple or<br />

branched. Leaves mostly radical, stalkless, oblong-lanceshaped,<br />

3-6 by f-lj in., toothed; upper surface densely hairy<br />

or almost hairless, wrinkled, lower densely hairy. Flowerwhorls<br />

many, distant, sticky-hairy, 6-8-flowered. Bracts<br />

sticky-hairy, large, round, abruptly pointed. Calyx bellshaped,<br />

glandular-hairy, teeth spinous, upper lip 3-toothed.<br />

Corolla f in. long ;<br />

tube slender, not longer than the calyx ;<br />

throat inflated ; upper lip long, curved, flattened, concave,<br />

lower small. Nutlets rfr in., brown.<br />

Flowers. May, June.<br />

Locality. Srinagar.<br />

Distribution. W. Himalaya, from Kashmir to Kumaon.<br />
