Arisaema tortuosum, Schott.<br />
A tall plant, reaching 3 ft. high. Tubers almost spherical,<br />
up to 4 in. diameter. Leaves 2-3, pedately divided. Stalks<br />
1-3 ft. long, the leaf-sheaths often mottled with purple.<br />
Leaflets 4-8 in. long, stalkless or stalked, egg-lance-shaped or<br />
linear-lance-shaped, very long-pointed, distant or crowded or<br />
almost radiately arranged. Flowering stem 2-4 ft. long.<br />
Spathe 1-6 in. long, green outside ;<br />
tube about as long as the<br />
limb, almost cylindric, gradually dilating into the limb, pale<br />
purplish inside limb<br />
; egg-shaped or egg-shaped-oblong, longpointed,<br />
broadly boat-shaped, curved inwards. Spadix 1- or<br />
2-sexual. Male flowers stalked. Appendage very long, much<br />
protruding, like a rat's tail, quite smooth, usually erect at<br />
first, then bent forward, and again erect. Ovary egg-shaped,<br />
narrowed into a short style. Berry 4-5-seeded.<br />
Flowers. June, July.<br />
Locality. Gulmarg, woods and thickets, above 8,000 ft.,<br />
common.<br />
Distribution. Subtropical and temperate Himalaya, from<br />
Kashmir to Sikkim and Bhutan, Khasia Hills, Manipur,<br />
Bengal, W. Peninsula.<br />

Kootstock globose. Stems 6-18 in. high. Leaves usually 2,<br />
sometimes only 1, pedately divided. Leaflets 9-11, unequal,<br />
stalkless or nearly so, lance-shaped, 3-6 by -14 in., longpointed.<br />
Spathe 1-2 in. long, purple inside, tube very short,<br />
green, limb yellow or faintly purple below. Spadix conical,<br />
short, prolonged into a yellow, club-shaped appendage included<br />
within the spathe. Female flowers forming a few rows of<br />
closely packed, globose ovaries, in close contact with the male<br />
flowers. Male flowers forming a very dense layer of almost<br />
sessile anthers.<br />
Locality.At elevations of 5,000-9,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. Temperate Himalaya, from Kashmir to<br />
Kumaon, Chamba, N.E. of Sikkim, Afghanistan, Arabia.<br />
