Rootstock tuberous. A tall, stout herb. Stem simple,<br />

1-2 ft. high, hairless or woolly. Leaves stalkless, lanceshaped<br />

or narrowly linear-lance-shaped, long-pointed, entire,<br />

sometimes toothed, 3-6 by i-f in., leathery, heart-shaped<br />

and stem-clasping at the base and often more or less united.<br />

Flower-spikes 1-5 in. long, oblong, dense, or interrupted at the<br />

base. Bracts lance-awl-shaped, ciliate. Floral leaves egglance-shaped,<br />

long-pointed. Calyx stalked, hairy, 4 in. long,<br />

teeth very long-awned, as long as the tube. Corolla blue,<br />

a little longer than the calyx. Stamens included. Nutlets<br />

TV in. long, round, compressed, brown, shining.<br />

Locality. Sonamarg.<br />

Distribution. W. temperate Himalaya, from Kashmir to<br />

Dalhousie, 8,000-11,000 ft.
