The Wintergreen.<br />

(Pyrola is the diminutive of pyrus, pear-tree.)<br />

A glabrous, perennial herb. Leaves round or broadly eggshaped<br />

or inversely egg-shaped or elliptic, narrowed into the<br />

stalk, 1-2 in. diameter; quite or nearly entire, leathery, blunt<br />

or slightly pointed ;<br />

stalk about as long as the blade. Flowerstem<br />

6-8 in. high. Flowers many, forming a raceme, drooping,<br />

about i in. diameter. Bracts ^ in. long, lance-shaped, stemclasping.<br />

Calyx deeply 5-lobed, persistent, segments broadly<br />

egg-shaped or egg-lance-shaped or oblong-lance-shaped. Petals<br />

i in. long, round or inversely egg-shaped, white and pink.<br />

Stamens 10, shorter than the style. Anthers blunt or mucronate<br />

at the base. Ovary 5-celled. Style as long as or longer<br />

than the petals ;<br />

lobes of stigma erect or spreading. Fruit a<br />

capsule, i-J in. diameter, crowned by the persistent style.<br />

Locality. Thajwas.<br />

Distribution. Europe, N. Asia, N.W. and E. Himalaya,<br />

Khasia Hills, N. America.<br />

Stem leafy, 1-4 in. high. Leaves few, rounded or spoon -<br />

shaped, toothed, wavy, alternate, membranous, shortly stalked.<br />

Flowering stem bearing one bract at the top. Flower large,<br />

solitary, at the end of the stem, drooping, then erect, white.<br />

Sepals blunt and broad, fringed with hairs. Petals nearly<br />

flat, spreading. Stamens shorter than the corolla, closely<br />

pressed to the petals. Stalks of anthers curved. Sjigmas<br />

long, persistent. Fruit a capsule, erect.<br />

Flowers. August. t<br />

Locality- Gulmarg, on banks under Spruce beside running<br />

water, about 8,500 ft., very rare.<br />

Distribution. N. and arctic Europe and Asia.
