A very variable plant, widely spreading, trailing, twining,<br />
with numerous branched, slender, finely furrowed, smooth,<br />
jointed stems with swollen joints, flowering throughout their<br />
length or sometimes barren. Leaves nearly sfcalkless, narrowly<br />
lance-shaped, i-1 in. long, sometimes gland-dotted. Stipules<br />
tubular, long, nerves several, strong, straight, the tips more<br />
or less projecting. Flowers small, green, tipped with white<br />
or red, in axillary clusters. Perianth 4- or 5-parted, cleft to<br />
near the base. Stamens 4 or 5. Styles 3, free, minute. Nut<br />
ovoid, obtusely 3-angled, minutely wrinkled.<br />
Flowers. June to September.<br />
Locality. At altitudes of 6,000-12,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. Punjab, Kashmir, N. and W. Asia, arctic<br />
and temperate Europe, introduced into N. America.<br />

A more or less hairless herb. Sterns short, almost simple,<br />
prostrate and ascending, angled. Branches many, stout,<br />
2-6 in. long, from a woody stock, scaly at the base, but not<br />
rooting. Leaves rarely 1 in. long, stalked, elliptic, blunt or<br />
sharp-pointed, thick, nerveless. Stipules egg-shaped, silvery,<br />
blunt, sharp- or long-pointed. Flowers in axillary clusters ;<br />
flower-stalks crowded, short, jointed at the tip. Perianth<br />
very thick, lobes with white margins, fruiting perianth pitchershaped,<br />
tube twice as long as the rounded lobes. Stamens<br />
very short. Styles 3, free. Nutlets rfr in. long, egg-shaped,<br />
compressed, or obtusely 3-angled, black, shining.<br />
Locality.At elevations of 11,000-16,500 ft.<br />
Distribution. Kashmir to Garhwal, Afghanistan, Caucasus,<br />
W. Asia, Soongaria.
