Not mealy. Leaves 1-3 in. long, leathery, egg-shaped or<br />

oblong or oblong-heart-shaped, or round, blunt, entire or<br />

obscurely and minutely toothed, narrowed into a long or short<br />

stalk f-l in. long. Flowering stem much longer than the<br />

stem, slender, 4-12 in. high, loosely 3-6-flowered ;<br />

bracts<br />

linear, about ^ in. long, base much produced, often bifid.<br />

Flower-stalks in. long, slender. Calyx tubular, 5-ribbed,<br />

glabrous, about J in. long, lobes narrowly triangular. Corolla<br />

white, tube twice as long as the calyx, limb flat, in. diameter<br />

lobes broad, notched.<br />

Very nearly related to Primula sibinca, but has larger<br />

leaves, longer leaf-stalks, larger flowers which are white, and<br />

a shorter fruit.<br />

Liddar Valley.<br />

Distribution. Alpine Himalaya, from Kashmir to Sikkim,<br />

12,000-15,000 ft. (not in Europe, Siberia and N. America).<br />

Primula minutissima, Jacquem.<br />

(Minutissima means very small.)<br />

A very small plant, densely tufted, stoloniferous, forming<br />

large patches of rosettes, each i-J in. diameter. Leaves<br />

densely crowded, dark green, -i in. long, spoon-lance-shaped<br />

or inversely lance-shaped, long-pointed, blunt or sharp-pointed,<br />

toothed, glabrous or slightly hairy above, more or less mealy<br />

beneafh. Flowering stem very short, hidden amongst the<br />

leaves, 1-3-flowered ;<br />

bracts 1-2, small. Flowers stalkless,<br />

very large considering the size of the plant. Calyx glabrous,<br />

about i in. long, cleft to the middle, tubular-bell-shaped, lobes<br />

oblong or lance-shaped, much shorter than the long corolla-
