Scutellaria angulosa, Benth.<br />
(Angulosa, angular, referring to the angular branches.)<br />
A tall, sparsely hairy herb. Stems very stout below.<br />
Branches rambling for several feet, 4-angled, angles with<br />
slender ribs. Leaves 1-3 in. long, egg- or lance-shaped, blunt<br />
or sharp-pointed, coarsely crenate, base rounded or almost<br />
heart-shaped, with a few small, scattered hairs, often purple<br />
beneath ;<br />
stalk -i in. long. Racemes 3-4 in. long, hairy,<br />
axillary or terminal. Bracts all leafy, upper small, entire.<br />
Flowers f-1 in. long, pale yellow or nearly white, tip tinged<br />
with purple. Corolla slightly narrowed at the base, throat<br />
widened. Nutlets granulate.<br />
Locality. Temperate region.<br />
Distribution. W. and Central Himalaya, from Kashmir to<br />
Nepal, 4,000-9,000 ft.<br />

(Said to be a corruption of the Greek aguios, weak in limbs,<br />
because A jug a reptans was used against gout, for which reason it<br />
was also called Iva arthrilica.)<br />

A softly hairy herb. Steins erect or ascending, usually<br />
diffusely branching from the base, 4-12 in. high, usually stout<br />
and leafy. Leaves 1-4 in. long, egg-shaped, toothed or nearly<br />
entire, lower ones stalked, upper stalkless. Flower-whorls<br />
axillary or crowded in spikes which are much shorter than<br />
the leafy egg-shaped or wedge- inversely egg-shaped, entire or<br />
toothed bracts. Flowers nearly i in. long, pale blue or lilac.<br />
Calyx in. long, hairy teeth half the length of the tube,<br />

egg-lance-shaped. Corolla-tube nearly twice as long as the<br />
calyx; upper lip erect, 2-fid ;<br />
side lobes of lower oblong,<br />
midlobe dilated, variable in length. Stamens protruding.<br />
