Euphorbia hypericifolia, Linn. Collett, fig. 145.<br />
(Hijpericifolia means having leaves like a Hypericum,<br />
St. John's Wort.)<br />
A hairless or slightly hairy annual herb. Stems 6-16 in.<br />
high, erect or decumbent. Leaves opposite short-stalked,<br />
oblong, i-1 by J-J in., blunt at the tip, rounded or heart-shaped<br />
at the base, margins toothed except near the base. Involucres<br />
very small, forming terminal or axillary cymes, often with<br />
2 floral leaves at their base ;<br />
teeth 4 ; glands green, bordered<br />
by a white or pale pink rounded limb. Styles very short.<br />
Capsules hairy. Seeds smooth.<br />
Flowers. April to September.<br />
Locality. In the hotter regions up to 4,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. All tropical regions except Australia and the<br />
Pacific Islands.<br />

Thyme-leafed Spurge.<br />
A hairy, much-branched annual herb. Stems 4-12 in. long,<br />
spreading flat on the ground. Leaves opposite, oblong, blunt,<br />
} in. long, teeth sharp or rounded. Involucres very small,<br />
axillary ;<br />
teeth 4 ; glands green, narrowly bordered with a<br />
white, rounded limb. Styles short. Capsule hairy. Seeds<br />
wrinkled.<br />
Flowers. April to September.<br />
Locality. Up to 5,500 ft.<br />
Distribution. All hot countries except Australia.<br />
Euphorbia Emodi, Hook. f.<br />
An annual, usually hairy herb. Stems 4-10 in. high,<br />
straggling from the base, ascending or decumbent, often purple.<br />
Leaves opposite, nearly stalkless, oblong, blunt, very unequal<br />
at the base, margins toothed, i-f in. long. Involucres very<br />
small, axillary, 4-toothed ; glands purple, conspicuously<br />
bordered with a broad white or pink, rounded limb. Styles<br />
long. Capsule hairless. Seeds rough with small points.<br />
Flowers. April to September.<br />
Locality. Iskardo, 6,000-7,000 ft.<br />
Distribution.<br />
W. Himalaya, W. Asia.
