Stachys floccosa, Benth. Woolly Woundwort.<br />

(Floccosa means covered with wool-like<br />

tufts.)<br />

Stems 2-4 ft. high, stout, erect, simple, obtusely 4-angled,<br />

densely covered with soft white wool. Leaves 3-4 by 1-2 in.,<br />

stalked, egg- or egg-lance-shaped, heart-shaped, sharp-pointed,<br />

crenate, thick, velvety above ;<br />

stalk i-1 in. long, very stout.<br />

Whorls dense, many-flowered, axillary and in a terminal spike,<br />

hairy, depressed. Bracts nearly as long as the calyx. Flowers<br />

stalkless. Calyx i in. long, when fruiting i in., hairy, teeth<br />

triangular, with a spinous point, coloured. Corolla-tube<br />

Nutlets inversely pear-shaped, smooth.<br />

oblong, heart-shaped, 2^-4 by li-2i in., crenate or toothed.<br />

Flowers i-f in. long, pink, spotted with purple, crowded in<br />

axillary whorls. Spikes long, terminal, more or less interrupted.<br />

Calyx bell-shaped, 10-nerved ;<br />

teeth 5, lance-shaped ;<br />

spinetipped,<br />

often tinged with pink. Corolla hairy ;<br />

tube cylindric,<br />

scarcely longer than the calyx limb<br />

; 2-lipped, upper lip erect,<br />

hood-like, entire, lower spreading, 3-lobed, mid-lobe broad,<br />

notched, much longer than the lateral. Stamens 4, in unequal<br />

pairs, ascending under the upper lip.<br />

Locality. Temperate region.<br />

Distribution. From Kashmir to Nepal, 6,000-9,000 ft,,<br />

Afghanistan, Central Asia.<br />

Stachys palustris,<br />

Linn. Marsh Woundwort.<br />

An erecb, perennial herb, 1-3 ft.<br />

high. Stem 4-angled,<br />

hollow, stout, with fine, turned-back hairs. Stem-leaves<br />

3-4 by |-1 in., short-stalked or stalkless, egg-shaped, oblong<br />

to lance-shaped, narrow, linear, more or less heart-shaped<br />

below, scalloped or coarsely toothed. Flowers dull purple, in<br />

whorls of 8-10. Bracts very small. Calyx J in. long, hairy ;<br />

teeth lance-shaped, spine-tipped, as long as the tube. Corollatube<br />

included in the calyx. Nutlets broadly and inversely<br />

egg-shaped, shining, with small dots.<br />

Locality. At elevations of 5,000-6,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Kashmir, N. and W. Asia, Europe, N.America.
