A prostrate, more or less hairy annual. Stem spreading,<br />
6-18 in. long, much-branched. Leaves short-stalked, i-1 in.<br />
long, broadly egg-shaped, heart-shaped, coarsely toothed.<br />
Flower-stalks axillary, solitary, about as long as the leaves,<br />
bent down in fruit. Sepals i in. long, egg-shaped, blunt,<br />
fringed with hairs, 3 -nerved in fruit, unequal. Corolla shorter<br />
or longer than the sepals, blue or white. Capsule J in. diameter,<br />
2-lobed, swollen, ceils 4-10-seeded. Seeds oblong or rounded,<br />
cup-shaped, tubercled, pale.<br />

Distribution. Punjab Plain and W. Himalaya, from<br />
Kashmir to Kumaon up to 9,000 ft., Central Bengal, extending<br />
to Europe, N. Africa, China, Japan and the Loochoo Islands.<br />
Veronica anagallis, Linn. Speedwell.<br />
(Called so because the plant resembles somewhat Anagallis, the<br />
Pimpernel, a genus of the family Primulaceae.)<br />
A fleshy, usually hairless herb. Stems hollow, erect or<br />
ascending, 6-24 in. high, up to 1 in. diameter. Leaves stalkless<br />
and half-stem-clasping or the lowest stalked, li-6 by<br />
J-f in., oblong or oblong-lance-shaped, entire or nearly so,<br />
hairless, usually heart-shaped at the base. Flowers in axillary,<br />
lax, slender racemes, 3-6 in. long. Bracts beneath the pedicels<br />
linear-lance-shaped, ^Vi in. long. Flower-stalks s-i in. long,<br />
filiform. Calyx iV-8 in. long, cleft to the base ; sepals eggshaped.<br />
Corolla G-% in. across, pale purple, or pink, or white ;<br />
tube very short. Fruit compressed, -i in. long, notched,<br />
hairless. Seeds ellipsoid-oblong, biconvex.<br />
A very variable plant and many forms have been distinguished.<br />
