(Spathulata means spoon- shaped, alluding to the shape of the<br />
radical<br />
leaves.)<br />
An annual herb, 6-12 in. high, branching from the base.<br />
Leaves opposite, radical ones li in. long, linear-spoon-shaped,<br />
stem- leaves linear-oblong, f by in. Flower-stalks long.<br />
Sepals narrowly oblong, about half the length of the corolla.<br />
Corolla purple, tube very short, lobes spreading, often f in.<br />
Stamens attached to the corolla-tube, filaments linear, anthers<br />
large, oblong. Ovary 1 -celled, stigma stalkless. Capsule<br />
oblong, sharp-pointed, stalkless. Seeds many, ellipsoid, larger<br />
than in the next species.<br />
Flowers. September.<br />
Localitij. Aporwat above Gulmarg, grassy stony hill-side,<br />
above 11,000 ft., not very abundant<br />

Distribution. Kashmir, Lahul.<br />

(Carinthiaca is derived from Carinthia, a country of Jugo-Slavia<br />
in southern Europe, and means that it was found in that country.)<br />
An annual herb, 1-6 in. high, stems very many, branching<br />
from the base. Kadical leaves 1 by J in., inversely egg-shaped,<br />
lasting or sometimes disappearing, stem-leaves egg-shaped or<br />
elliptic, i by i in., narrowed at the base. Flower-stalks<br />
mostly long, i-2 in. long. Sepals i-J by -g- in., elliptic, more<br />
or less blunt. Corolla of 5 petals, tube very short, lobes<br />
J by J in., blue with green nerves, fringed near the base.<br />
Anthers oblong, often as long as the filaments. Capsule 4 in.<br />
long, oblong, sharp-pointed, stalkless. Seeds many, small,<br />
ellipsoid.<br />
Flowers. August.<br />
Locality. Aporwat above Gulmarg, open hill-sides and<br />
margs, t<br />
above 10,000 ft., common; Thajwas; Karakoram.<br />
Distribution. W. Himalaya, from Kashmir to Kumaon,<br />
10,000-13,000 ft., Europe, Caucasus, Afghanistan, Central Asia,<br />
Siberia.
