Pigs. 3 and 4. Gaultheria trichophylla, Eoyle.<br />
(Trichophylla is derived from triches, hairs, and phyllon, leaf,<br />
alluding to the long hairs on the margin of the leaves.<br />
A small shrub. Stems 6-12 in., wiry, prostrate, muchbranched,<br />
more or less hairy upwards. Leaves persistent,<br />
alternate, oblong, i by i in., almost stalkless, entire or<br />
indistinctly crenulate, hairless on both surfaces, margins<br />
usually long-hairy. Flowers small. Flower-stalk TV in. long,<br />
with bracts. Calyx egg-shaped, 5-fid, in fruit enlarged, teeth<br />
TV in. long, egg-shaped-oblong. Corolla in. long and broad,<br />
wide bell-shaped, red or nearly white. Stamens 10 ; anthercells<br />
not two-horned at the tip. Ovary 5-celled; style<br />
cylindric stigma simple. Fruit a capsule, I in. diameter ; ;<br />
fleshy calyx blue-black.<br />

Locality. Aporwat, above Gulmarg, rocky hill-side amongst<br />
Birch trees, above 11,000 ft., common<br />
; Thajwas.<br />
Distribution. Alpine Himalaya, from Kashmir to Sikkim,<br />
10,000-13,000 ft.<br />

(Nummularioides means resembling Nummularia.)<br />
A small shrub. Stems prostrate, hairy, much -branched,<br />
leafy. Leaves thin, nearly stalkless, spreading, egg-shaped,<br />
rounded at the base, i by Jin., almost entire, glabrous above,<br />
hairy beneath, margins toothed, fringed. Flowers solitary, in<br />
the axils, i in. long, pink or white ;<br />
stalks tn in. long, clothed<br />
with hairless, leathery, egg-shaped-oblong bracts. Calyxteeth<br />
5, lance-shaped, i in. long. Corolla ^ by -&- in., wide,<br />
tubu*ar teeth<br />
; very small, bent back. Stamens 10, anthercells<br />
2-horned at the tip. Fruit i in. diameter, enclosed in<br />
the fleshy, dark-blue, persistent calyx.<br />
Locality. At altitudes of 5,000-9,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. Throughout the Himalaya up to 9,000 ft.,<br />
Khasia Hills, 4,000-6,000 ft., Java.
