upper lip erect, much inflated at the base, then bent down,<br />

with a long flexuous beak. Filaments inserted opposite the<br />

top of the ovary, at the base and above the middle densely<br />

hairy, otherwise hairless. Ovary egg-shaped. Stigma included.<br />

Capsule broadly egg-shaped, slightly protruding. Seeds eggshaped,<br />

deeply netted.<br />

Nearly related to P. pyramidata and P. pectinata, but can<br />

be distinguished by the yellow corolla.<br />

5. Pedicularis Garckeana, Prain.<br />

Garcke's Louse wort.<br />

Stems 2-6 in, high, slender, erect, many-leafed. Leaves<br />

stalked, linear, pinnatifid, 1|-2|- in. long, 5 in. broad ; segments<br />

12-20 pairs, close together, egg-shaped, toothed. Flowers<br />

variously rose-coloured or whitish-rose, axillary, long-stalked,<br />

forming dense racemes. Calyx cylindrical-bell-shaped, hairy,<br />

5-toothed ; segments elliptic. Corolla-tube slightly hairy<br />

outside, more than by i longer than the calyx, lower lip 3-fid,<br />

lateral lobes egg-shaped, the mid-lobe oblong, truncate ; upper<br />

lobe inflated, turned inwards, erect in the basal part, antherbearing<br />

part sickle-shaped, prolonged into a slender, bifid beak.<br />

Stamens inserted midway between the top of the ovary and<br />

the top of the tube. Filaments hairy. Ovary lance-shaped.<br />

Stigma included. Capsule obliquely oblong, with a short cusp,<br />

by i longer than the calyx.<br />

Flowers. August.<br />

Locality. Aporwat above Lian Marg, moist turf on hill-tops,<br />

12,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Kashmir, Eastern Himalaya.<br />

A low hairless plant, 1-4 in. high. Stems subsolitary or<br />

many from the root. Eadical leaves few (1-4), long-stalked;<br />

stem-leaves 1-3, linear-lance-shaped, pinnatifid, segments<br />

12-25 pairs, egg-lance-shaped, toothed. Flowers red, few, 2-5
