(Is the Greek name of the Bay-tree, Laurus nobilis.)<br />

An evergreen shrub, 5-8 ft. high young shoots hairy, soon<br />

becoming hairless. Leaves 2-5 by v-lj- in., narrowly ellipticlance-shaped<br />

or inversely lance-shaped, narrowed at both<br />

ends, thick, hairless ;<br />

stalk up to J in. long. Flowers white<br />

or rose-purple, in terminal heads. Bracts 1-f in. long, oblong<br />

or lance-shaped, falling soon. Flower-stalks very short.<br />

Perianth-tube i-f in. long, silky ; lobes -J in. long, egg-shaped,<br />

sharp-pointed, with a tuft of hairs at the tip. Ovary hairless.<br />

Fruit egg-shaped, in. long.<br />

Flowers. June.<br />

Locality. Tosh Maidan, 11,000-12,000 ft., very rare.<br />

Distribution. W. Himalaya, 5,000-12,000 ft.<br />

(Oleoides means resembling Olea, the Olive tree.)<br />

A much-branched shrub, 4-8 ft. high young shoots hairy.<br />

Leaves 1-2 by - in. oblong or linear, narrowed at both ends,<br />

mucronate, thick, hairless, stalkless. Flowers white or tinged<br />

with pink, forming terminal, bractless, 3-9-flowered heads ;<br />

stalks very short. Perianth f-f in. long, very hairy outside;<br />

lobes oblong, shorter than the tube. Ovary densely hairy.<br />

Fruit egg-shaped, i-| in. long, orange or scarlet, when young<br />

enclosed in the perianth-tube.<br />

Locality. Dachigam Bakh ; Gagribal.<br />

Distribution. W. Himalaya, 3,000-9,000 ft., W. Asia,<br />

S. Europe.
