Scorzonera purpurea, Linn. Purple Scorzonera.<br />
Glabrous or sparsely woolly. Eoot cylindric, neck densely<br />
fibrous. Stem slender, erect, leafy, often woolly below the<br />
heads. Leaves narrowly linear, shorter than the stem, radical<br />
leaves in the lower part slightly hairy, otherwise glabrous,<br />
stem-leaves stalkless, half-stem-clasping. Heads 1-4, cylindric.<br />
Involucral bracts hairy, outermost egg-shaped, inner lanceshaped,<br />
shorter than the purple flowers. Achenes angled, on<br />
the angles often slightly tubercular-wrinkled. Pappus dirty -<br />
white, longer than the achene.<br />
Locality. Banehal, 8,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. Europe, Central and S. Eussia, Asia Minor,<br />
Siberia, Kashmir.<br />

The Goat's Beard.<br />
(From the Greek tragos, a goat, and pogon, a beard, referring<br />
to the long pappus.)<br />

Erect, more or less grass-like. Stem 1-2 ft. high, usually<br />
branched and leafy, bluish green, smooth, tall, with a milky<br />
juice. Leaves linear, tapering to a long point, wavy, stemclasping,<br />
^-J in. diameter about the middle, with swollen<br />
sheaths. Flower-heads yellow stalk hardly thickened under<br />
;<br />
the head. Involucral bracts about 8, as long as or longer<br />
than the flowers. Achenes f to nearly 1 in. long with a long<br />
beak, rough, beak as long as or shorter than the body.<br />
Pappus hair has stalked feathery down.<br />

Locality. Srinagar Gadsar ; ; Dachigam Eakh on right bank<br />
of stream along road ;<br />
near Shirazia Bagh.<br />
Distribution. W. Himalaya and W. Tibet, up to 14,000 ft.,<br />
westward to the Atlantic.
