A hairless, perennial herb. Branches prostrate, leafy.<br />
Leaves \ in. long and broad, spreading, almost stalkless,<br />
broadly elliptic, blunt, 3-nerved, leathery, green or purplishbrown.<br />
Flowers at the end of the branches, solitary, stalkless.<br />
Calyx \ in. long, bell- shaped, tube purplish, lobes as long ag<br />
the tube, spoon-shaped, spreading and bent back, green,<br />
leathery. Corolla blue, tube-bell-shaped, lobes 5, rounded,<br />
egg-shaped, throat with erect scales. Style slender.<br />
Locality. Kashmir Valley.<br />
Distribution. Apparently endemic in Kashmir.<br />

Stems absent or up to 6 in. high, usually 1-2 flowering and<br />
1-2 barren ones from the same root. Leaves oblong-linear,<br />
lower ones 2^ by 1 in., stem-leaves shorter, united at the base<br />
into a short tube. Flowers often 1-3 on each branch, shortly<br />
stalked or almost stalkless. Calyx-tube % in. long, lobes \ in.<br />
long, oblong, with a wide sinus between neighbouring lobes,<br />
sinus often folded. Corolla 1-li by J-f in., funnel-shaped or<br />
almost tube-shaped, lobes in. long, sharp-pointed. Capsule<br />
i-f in., stalk \-\ in. long.<br />
Locality. At elevations of 16,000-18,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. Alpine Himalaya, from Kashmir to Sikkim.<br />
Gentiana pedicellata, Wall. (= G. quadrifaria, C. B. Clarke).<br />
(Pedicellata means having a stalk to the flower.)<br />
Stems usually many, erect or decumbent, 4-10 in. high,<br />
branching from the base. Leaves green, radical ones 2 -14 in.<br />
long, egg- or lance-shaped, often forming rosettes, stem-leaves<br />
smaller, leathery, i-i in., egg- and lance-shaped. Cymes<br />
usually 3-5-flowered. Flowers i in. long stalks<br />
; 0-i in. long.<br />
Calyx shorter than the corolla-tube, hairless, lobes lanceshaped,<br />
sharp-pointed. Corolla 5-lobed, i-i in. long, intensely<br />
blue or yellowish-green, lobes green outside, folds between the<br />
lobes tfmall, bifid or notched, throat without scales. Capsule<br />
i by i-i in., ellipsoid or egg-shaped, stalk J-^ in. Seeds<br />
ellipsoid, smooth.<br />
Locality. At elevations from 3,000-10,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. From Kashmir to Bhutan, Khasia Hills,<br />
3,000-5,000 ft., Burma, China, Deccan Mts., Ceylon, Java.
