A softly hairy herb. Stems ascending, diffusely branched<br />
from the base. Leaves stalkless or short-stalked, egg-shaped<br />
or oblong, 2-6 in. long, toothed or almost entire, lower surface<br />
often tinged with purple ;<br />
radical leaves spreading. Spikes<br />
1-4 in. long ;<br />
whorls usually crowded, lower sometimes distant.<br />
Bracts egg-shaped or oblong, much longer than the flowers.<br />
Calyx jVA in- long teeth<br />
; lance-shaped, as long as the tube.<br />
Corolla blue, tube slender, i- in. long, protruding, hairless<br />
or hairy ;<br />
limb very small ; upper lip very short, 2-lobed.<br />

Locality. At elevations up to 7,000 ft.<br />

Bootstock stout. Stems stout, erect, 2-4 ft. high. Leaves<br />
stalked ;<br />
lower egg-lance-shaped, about 5 by 3 in., deeply and<br />
irregularly cut into several coarsely toothed lobes ; upper<br />
narrow, lobed or nearly entire. Flowers i in. long, pink,<br />
crowded in axillary whorls which form long, terminal, more<br />
or less interrupted spikes. Bracts spinous. Calyx in. long,<br />
shortly tubular ;<br />
teeth 5, triangular, spine-tipped, spreading.<br />
Corolla hairy, especially the upper lip tube<br />
; hardly longer<br />
than the calyx- tube ;<br />
limb 2-lipped, upper lip erect, hood-like,<br />
entire, lower spreading, 3-lobed, midlobe longest, entire.<br />
Stamens 4, in unequal pairs, ascending under the upper lip,<br />

below Basam Gali, in open<br />
situations, above 10,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. Temperate W. Himalaya, from Kashmir to<br />
Kumaon, 6,000-10,000 ft., N. Asia, W. Asia, Europe.
