Stem round, branched, smooth, its length depending on the<br />
depth of the water. Leaves stalked ;<br />
the upper floating, 2^-4<br />
by 1-lJ in., alternate or uppermost opposite, oblong or ellipticlance-shaped,<br />
sharp-pointed, blunt or long-pointed, opaque,<br />
glossy, many-nerved ; stipules 1-li in. long ;<br />
the lower leaves<br />
submerged, 8 in. long, membranous, wavy, with stalks shorter<br />
than the blades. Peduncles axillary or leaf -opposed, 1-2 in.<br />
long, stout or slender, not thickened upwards. Flower-spike<br />
li in. long, dense-flowered, green. Sepals 4, clawed, ^o in.<br />
long including the claw, which is nearly as long as the limb.<br />
Limb almost round, concave. Fruit made up of small, H" in.<br />
long, shortly beaked drupelets.<br />

Locality. Nil Nag, in lake, 6,900 ft.<br />
Distribution. Throughout the plains of India, Ceylon,<br />
Malay and Sandwich Islands.<br />

Leaves elliptic-oblong, egg-shaped, oblong or elliptic, sharppointed<br />
at both ends, or almost blunt, 5-7-nerved including<br />
the midrib, rVli in. long, stalk shorter. Stipules i-1 in. long ;<br />
submerged leaves linear-long-pointed or filiform. Spike s-i in.<br />
long, with flowers smaller than in P. indicus, and the whorls<br />
more distant. Peduncles as long as or longer than the spike,<br />
very slender. Sepals round-inversely egg-shaped. Fruit made<br />
up of druplets which are half-globose with a stout hooked beak<br />
and ribs often toothed or tubercled.<br />
Locality Up to 7,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. Plains of India, ascending the N.W. Himalaya<br />
to 7,000 ft., and Sikkim to 9,000 ft.<br />
