A small, hairless annual, 6-12 in. high, with pale rigid stems<br />

and branches. Leaves alternate, stalkless, oblong-inversely<br />

egg-shaped or linear, sharp-long-pointed, 1 in. and less long.<br />

Involucres hairless, hidden by the floral leaves, very small,<br />

lobes fringed ; glands very small, half moon-shaped. Styles<br />

free. Capsule rV in. long, thin, egg-shaped; cocci keeled.<br />

Seeds transversely furrowed.<br />

Locality. Gilgit.<br />

Distribution. Kashmir, Punjab, Afghanistan, Persian<br />

Baluchistan, westward to Arabia, Central and S. Europe,<br />

N. Africa.<br />

Euphorbia pilosa, Linn. Hairy Spurge.<br />

A hairless or hairy perennial herb. Stems 1-3 ft., erect,<br />

branched at the top. Leaves alternate, stalkless, oblong,<br />

f-2i in. long, entire, narrowed to the base or rounded, tip<br />

rounded. Inflorescence umbellate ;<br />

bracts yellow-green.<br />

Involucres $ in. diameter, 5-toothed ; glands yellow, margins<br />

rounded, entire. Styles long, united about half-way up.<br />

Capsule J in. diameter, more or less covered with small,<br />

often firmly hairy tubercles. Seeds smooth.<br />

Locality. Gulmarg, 8,700 ft. ; Tangmarg, forest, 7,200-<br />

8,700 ft.<br />

Distribution. W. Himalaya, up to 9,000 ft., N. and W. Asia,<br />

A hairless annual herb. Stems 6-18 in. high, usually muchbranched<br />

ones smaller, tip finely toothed. Inflorescence umbellate,<br />

rays often very short. Involucres 4-toothed ; glands yellow,<br />

rounded, entire. Styles free. Capsules -| ir. diameter, smooth.<br />
