A perennial, fleshy herb ;<br />

rootstock stout, with<br />
thick fleshy root-fibres. Leaves fleshy, oblong-egg-shaped or<br />
inversely egg-shaped, or elliptic or oblong, toothed or crenate,<br />
radical ones 2-3 in. long, variable in breadth and toothing,<br />
narrowed into a very stout stalk, stem-leaves 4-14 in., halfstem-clasping,<br />
often quite entire. Flowering stems several,<br />
3-10 in. high, decumbent below, stout, leafy above. Flowers<br />
deep blue, purplish, rose or white, forming spikes 2-5 in. long.<br />
Bracts inversely egg-shaped or elliptic, J-i in. long. Calyx<br />
spathe-like, nearly as long as the corolla-tube or shorter,<br />
lobes finely fringed. Corolla-tube curved, rather slender ;<br />
limb 2-lipped ;<br />
lower lip 2- or 3-cleft. Stamens 2, inserted<br />
on the throat of the corolla ;<br />
anthers kidney-shaped. Ovary<br />
2-celled.<br />

Locality. Aporwat ; Khelanmarg, open hill-side by water,<br />
above 10,000 ft., common, at the foot of big rocks, near nala,<br />
stony ground, 10,000 ft., very rare; Basam Gali, on top;<br />
Damam Sar, 13,000-14,000 ft., abundant everywhere; Tosh<br />
Maidan ; Thajwas Khur<br />
; Mt., 14,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. Alpine Himalaya, from Kashmir to Sikkim,<br />
10,000-17,000 ft., mountains of Central and N. Asia, arctic<br />
Asia and America.
