Veronica ciliata, Fisch.<br />
Hairy Speedwell.<br />
Hairy all over. Stem 4-12 in. high, stiff, erect, usually<br />
simple. Leaves stalkless, egg-shaped or oblong, blunt at the<br />
tip, entire or toothed, f-li in. long, hairy on both surfaces.<br />
Flowers stalkless, forming stalkless or stalked hairy heads ;<br />
bracts as long as the heads. Sepals 4, oblong, blunt at tip,<br />
1 in. long. Corolla i in. diameter, lobes broad. Stamens 2,<br />
included. Fruit egg-shaped-oblong, blunt and notched at tip,<br />
very variable in size, as long as or longer than the calyx.<br />
Seeds round, compressed, plano-convex.<br />
Flowers. July.<br />
Locality. Tosh Maidan to Damam Sar, 13,000 ft.<br />
Distribution. Alpine Himalaya, from Kashmir to Sikkim,<br />
11,000-16,000 ft., Central Asia, Siberia.<br />

This species is nearly related to Veronica biloba. Linn., but<br />
can be distinguished by the following<br />
: Corolla small, bluish.<br />
Calyx in fruit smaller. Capsule less flattened, divided nearly<br />
to the base, lobes diverging. Seeds about 5 in each cell,<br />
caterpillar-liko, pale brown, with a deep groove on one side,<br />
the other side being very strongly transversely ribbed, with<br />
about 6 constrictions.<br />

Locality. Srinagar on the banks of the Jhelum, near the<br />
Residency.<br />
Veronica hederaefolia, Linn. Ivy-leafed Speedwell, Bird's Eye,<br />
Botherum, Corn Speedwell, Hen-bit, Ivy Chick weed.<br />
(Hederaefolia means having leaves like the Hedera or Ivy.)<br />
An annual. Stem trailing, many-branched, round, soft,<br />
covered with soft hair. Leaves -J-? in. diameter, stalked,<br />
round-egg-shaped, 5-7-lobed with wide angles, alternate, heartshaped<br />
at the base, fleshy, hairy. Flowers pale blue, in the<br />
axils, borne on 1 -flowered stalks which in fruit are turned<br />
back. Flower-stalks about as long as the leaves. Sepals 4,<br />
heart-shaped, long-pointed, hairy on the margins, longer than<br />
the corolla. Corolla (T in. diameter, boll-shaped, petals oval,<br />
the lower of which are less than the calyx and hairy within.<br />
Capsule consisting of 2 swollen heart-shaped lobes, containing<br />
