A hairless herb. Kootstock creeping, short, thick. Stems<br />

6-10 in., erect, unbranched. Leaves 3, short-stalked, broadly<br />

egg-shaped, l^-4j by 1J-4 in., sharp-pointed, arranged in a<br />

whorl at the top of the stem, with a solitary stalked flower<br />

in the middle. Perianth lurid purple, persistent ; segments 6,<br />

distinct, narrowly lance-shaped, -1 in. long, spreading in<br />

flower, bent back in fruit. Stamens 6, attached to the base,<br />

erect, much shorter than the perianth, anthers yellow ovary<br />

3-celled. Style purple, divided to the base into 3 long,<br />

linear arms. Berry globose, J-f in. diameter. Seeds many,<br />

egg-shaped, with a pulpy appendage at the side.<br />
