Scrophulariaceae.)<br />

Stems 2-12 in. high, curved, usually quite hairless. Leaves<br />

linear-oblong, the radical ones tufted, long-stalked, pinnatisect,<br />

segments 9-12 pairs, egg-shaped, toothed ;<br />

stem-leaves few,<br />

scattered, short-stalked. Flowers purple or pink, pale rose, or<br />

white with salmon-coloured spots, axillary, stalked, forming<br />

dense-flowered racemes. Calyx egg-shaped, 5-toothed, uppermost<br />

segment lance-shaped, entire, the others egg-shaped,<br />

toothed. Corolla-tube almost twice as long as the calyx.<br />

Lower lip 3-fid, lobes rounded, lateral ones twice as broad as<br />

the mid-lobe.<br />

Upper lip sickle-shaped,<br />

with a slender, incurved or S -shaped, sharp-pointed, entire<br />

beak. Stamens inserted at the top of the tube ;<br />

hairy. Ovary lance-shaped. Stigma protruding. Capsule<br />

egg-shaped-oblong, obliquely long-pointed. Seeds egg-shaped,<br />

pale, netted.<br />

Can be distinguished from P. sip/ionantha by the 5-toothed<br />

calyx and the entire beak. In P. siphonantha the calyx is<br />

3-toothed and the beak 2 -fid.<br />

Flowers. June- August.<br />

Locality. Aporwat above Gulmarg, damp places on open<br />

hill-side, above 10,000 ft., common below Garam Gali<br />

; ;<br />

Diskhal in Juniper tract, abundant; /oji La; Ladakh,<br />

11,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Alpine W. Himalaya, 10,000-17,000 ft., B.<br />

Himalaya, Alatau Mts., Turkestan, Yarkand, Kansu, N. Tibet,<br />

Yunnan.<br />

More or less hairy. Stem usually very stout, tall, erect,<br />

simple, leafy, 6-24 in. high. Leaves alternate, all stalked,<br />

linear or linear-oblong, pinnatifid to the middle, lobes rounded,<br />

toothed or lobed. Eadical leaves many in small stemless<br />

specim'ens, falling off soon in large ones, blade 3-4 by yV in.,<br />

segments y-J in. long stem-leaves like the rest ; ;<br />

stalk 1-2 in.<br />

Raceme often 8 in. long, with many rather crowded flowers ;<br />

bracts usually shorter than the calyx flower-stalks -J in.<br />
