Europe.<br />

Persian Speedwell.<br />

A prostrate, hairy annual. Branches 6-12 in. long. Leaves<br />

short-stalked, oblong or egg-shaped, i-l in. long, blunt at<br />

tip, coarsely toothed, base rounded or heart-shaped. Flowers<br />

solitary in the axils of leaves. Flower-stalk slender, much<br />

longer than the leaves, bent down in fruit.<br />

Sepals i in. long,<br />

egg- or lance-shaped, in fruit much longer than the capsule,<br />

spreading. Corolla i in. diameter, bright blue. Capsule<br />

-i in. diameter, very much broader than long, flattened, cells<br />

5-12-seeded. Seeds boat-shaped, deeply pitted.<br />

Thyme-leafed Speedwell.<br />

A perennial herb, hairless or hairy, often glandular. Stems<br />

ascending, 3-12 in. high. Leaves stalkless or the lowest shortstalked,<br />

oblong-egg-shaped ; lower opposite, without flowers,<br />

gradually passing into small, alternate bracts, each bearing in<br />

its axil a single flower. Flowers small, i in. diameter, pale<br />

blue or white, short- stalked. Sepals i-1 in. long, inversely<br />

egg-shaped, oblong, fringed with hairs, shorter than the<br />

corolla. Corolla i in. diameter. Anthers blue. Styles as<br />

long as the capsules, purplish. Capsule inversely heartshaped,<br />

not as long as broad, smooth, shorter than the calyx.<br />

Seeds small, plano-convex.<br />

Locality. Tangmarg, 7,100 ft. ; Gulmarg, 8,600-8,700 ft.<br />

Khelanmarg, 10,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Temperate and subalpine W. Himalaya, from<br />

Kashmir to Kumaon, 7,000-13,000 ft., N. Asia, N. Africa,<br />

Europe, N. and S. America.
