(Linearis means linear, in allusion to the shape<br />

of the leaves.)<br />

Kootstock often the size of a walnut. Stems 6-18 in. high,<br />

ascending, stout, sparsely leafy, hairless or slightly hairy.<br />

Leaves stalkless, linear, sharp-pointed or blunt, 1-3 by i in.,<br />

entire. Flowers i-f in. long, blue, in stalkless whorls which<br />

are crowded in small heads or terminal spikes up to 2 in. long,<br />

often interrupted near the base ; bracts lance- or awl-shaped.<br />

Calyx i in. long, tube-shaped, hairy teeth<br />

; linear-lance-shaped,<br />

spinous, shorter than the tube. Corolla-tube twice as long as<br />

the calyx, throat dilated, lips short. Very variable regarding<br />

the size of all parts.<br />

Flowers. May to July.<br />

Locality. Near Shirazia Bagh ; Tangmarg, in forest,<br />

7,200-8,700 ft. ; Mekhowali, 9,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. W. temperate Himalaya, from Kashmir to<br />

Simla, 7,000-11,000 ft.<br />

Nepeta longibracteata,<br />

Benth.<br />

(Longibracteata means having long bracts.)<br />

Kootstock long, stout, much divided at the top. Stems<br />

dwarf, 3-6 in. high, almost erect or prostrate, simple or<br />

branched, softly hairy. Leaves stalked, fan-shaped or wedgeshaped<br />

and inversely egg-shaped, crenate or lobed, 4 in. long<br />

or broad, or less ;<br />

stalk about the same length. Spikes headshaped,<br />

1 in. diameter. Uppermost bracts crowded, longsilky,<br />

lower bracts fan-shaped, comb-shaped. Calyx i in.<br />

long, silky, teeth almost equal, nearly as long as the tube.<br />

Corolla blue, twice as long as the calyx, tube curved, funnelshaped,<br />

limb small. Stamens included. Nutlets 5 in. long.<br />

Lemon-scented.<br />

Locality. Alpine region.<br />

Distribution. Kashmir, 14,000-17,000 ft.<br />

Nepeta mollis, Benth. (Including N. distans, Benth., of the<br />

" Flora of British India.")<br />

(Mollis means soft, alluding to the fact that the plant is softly hairy.)<br />

Bootstock elongate, woody. Stoms 6-18 in. high, slender,<br />

softly hairy, sparingly leafy. Leaves 1-2 by J-l in., shortstalked,<br />

egg-heart-shaped, blunt, crenate, grey-hairy; stalk<br />
