Stem erect, 2-5 ft. high, simple or sometimes branched,<br />

more or less hairy. Basal leaves short-stalked, lance-shaped<br />

or oblong-lance-snaped, 3-6 in. long including the long stalk,<br />

f- in. broad, gradually narrowed into the stalk, 1-nerved,<br />

rough on both sides with long, bulbous-based hairs ;<br />

stem-leaves short-stalked, upper stalkless, very variable, sometimes<br />

linear, then lance-shaped or oblong, 2-7 in. by -2 in.,<br />

sharp-pointed. One-sided racemes of many flowers forming<br />

lax racemes. Sepals oblong-elliptic, up to tV in. long, blunt,<br />

ciliate. Corolla pale blue or white, funnel-shaped, iVo in.<br />

long, limb cleft almost to the base, almost as long as the tube,<br />

furnished at the mouth with 5 transversely linear scales which<br />

are much broader than long. Stamens very short, anthers<br />

egg-shaped, much smaller than the scales. Style stout, very<br />

short. Nutlets almost globose, up to i in. diameter, more or<br />

less uniformly covered with hooked bristles.<br />

Locality. Up to 8,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Africa, Arabia, Afghanistan, N.W. Himalaya<br />

to Sikkim, southwards to Ceylon, Assam, Burma, Siam,<br />

China, Philippines.<br />

(Petiolatum means stalked, alluding to the long stalks of the<br />
