Codonopsis ovata, Benth.<br />
Boot woody, large, spindle-shaped. Stem 6-12 in., decumbent,<br />
then upright. Leaves |-f by \-\ in., alternate and<br />
opposite, egg-shaped, blunt or sharp-pointed, hairy on both<br />
surfaces ;<br />
stalk -J in. long. Flower-stalks 3-6 in. long, at<br />
the end of the branches. Calyx-lobes \-\ in., elliptic-oblong,<br />
slighljly hairy. Corolla 1-li by -f in., broadly bell-shaped,<br />
widened upwards, sky-blue. Capsule inversely conic, depressed,<br />
i-J in. broad, beak i in. long. Seeds xV in. long, narrowly<br />
ellipsoid, not glistening.<br />
Flmvers. June, July.<br />
Locality. Aporwat above Gulmarg, open rocky hill-side,<br />
above 11,000 ft. ;<br />
Tosh Maidan, 11,000-12,000 ft. ; Charpat, in<br />
Juniper tract.<br />
Distribution. W. Himalaya, from Kashmir to Garhwal,<br />
8,000-12,000 ft.<br />

A nearly glabrous perennial herb. Boot long, woody. Stems<br />
i-4 ft. high, erect. Radical leaves stalked ;<br />
stem-leaves 3 by<br />
Ij in., stalked, alternate, egg-lance-shaped, indistinctly<br />
crenate. Flowers many, forming a lax panicle, sometimes<br />
only a simple terminal cluster ;<br />
stalks i-1 in. long. Calyxtube<br />
inversely conical, teeth i in. long, awl-shaped. Corolla<br />
Filaments of stamens<br />
blue, lobes linear-oblong, J-J by rVi in-<br />
short, hairy, converging above ;<br />
anthers large, oblong, at first<br />
forming a cylinder round the style, but quite free. ,Ovary<br />
2-celled ; stigma 2-lobed. Fruits white when young.<br />
Flowers and Fruits. May, June.<br />
Locality. Near Shirazia Bagh, on hill; Gadsar; Dachigam<br />
Bakh ; below Gulmarg, damp woods, about 8,000 ft., common.<br />
Distribution. N. W. Himalaya, Kashmir, 6,000-8,000 ft.
