Stachys sylvatica, Linn. Hedge Woundwort,<br />

Eootstock creeping, stoloniferous. Stem 1-3 ft. high, erect<br />

or ascending, solid, rather slender. Leaves 2-4 in., longstalked,<br />

radical, soon withering. Stem-leaves egg-shaped,<br />

heart-shaped, coarsely toothed, stalk J- in. long, rough.<br />

Flowers purplish red or pink, in whorls of 6-12. Lower<br />

bracts toothed, upper lance-shaped, entire. Bracteoles very<br />

small. Calyx i in. long teeth triangular, awl-shaped.<br />

Corolla i in. long, longer than the calyx lower<br />

white markings. Nutlets almost globose.<br />

Rootstock stout, woody. Stems 1-2 ft. high, hairless or<br />

hairy, much-branched; branches slender. Leaves -li in.,<br />

short-stalked or stalkless, oblong, egg-lance-shaped or linear,<br />

entire or irregularly lobed. Whorls 1-2-flowered, axillary.<br />

Flowers stalkless. Calyx J in. long, bell-shaped, hairless or<br />

very hairy ;<br />

teeth as long as the tube, triangular, tips long,<br />

hairy, erect or spreading. Corolla f-1 in. long, pink, slightly<br />

hairy tube thrice as long as the calyx upper lip long, narrow.<br />

Nutlets R in. long, broadly and inversely egg-shaped-oblong.<br />

Locality. At elevations of 10,000-14,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. Kashmir, Kashgar.<br />
