Veronica verna, Linn. Vernal Speedwell.<br />

An erect annual. Stem 2-6 in. high, simple or branched<br />

below, hairy or downy, glandular above. Leaves i-i in. long,<br />

deeply divided to the base, the lower stalked, coarsely toothed,<br />

lobed, the upper bract-like, lance-shaped. Flowers deep blue,<br />

with darker lines, axillary stalks very short. Calyx longer<br />

than the flower-stalk, sepals linear-lance-shaped. Corolla<br />

shorter than the calyx. Capsule flattened at the margin,<br />

fringed with hairs on the keel, inversely heart-shaped, in.<br />

diameter, about as long as the sepals. Seeds flat.<br />

Locality. At altitudes of 5,000-7,000 ft.<br />

Distribution. W. Himalaya, N. Asia, Europe.<br />

(From the Greek leptos, slender, and rliabdos, a rod, alluding to<br />

the steins.)<br />

An erect, nearly hairless herb.<br />

Stems 1-3 ft. high, branching.<br />

Leaves stalkless, 1-3 in. long, pinnately cut, segments linear,<br />

entire or toothed ;<br />

lower loaves opposite or clustered, upper<br />

alternate. Mowers pale pink, -J in. diameter, forming slender<br />

glandular racemes. Calyx bell-shaped, 5-toothed. Corolla<br />

about twice the length of the calyx, J in. diameter, lobes<br />

nearly equal. Stamens 4, in unequal pairs ;<br />

anthers free.<br />

Style long, stigma very small. Ovules 2 in each cell. Capsule<br />

oblong, i in. long, as long as the calyx, flattened, enclosed in<br />

the calyx. Seeds 2-4.<br />

Flowers. August, September.<br />

Locality. Sincl Valley ; Dachigam ;<br />

Dras.<br />

Distribution. W. temperate Himalaya, from Kashmir to<br />

Kumaon, 5,000-11,000 ft. ; Afghanistan, Persia.<br />
