often longer than the flowers. Flowers flesh- or rose-coloured.<br />

The 2 lateral sepals spreading, the middle one and the petals<br />

meeting together ; lip 3-lobed, the border turned down,<br />

scalloped, the spur awl-like, slightly shorter than the ovary.<br />

(Latifolia means broad -leafed.)<br />

A hairless, terrestrial herb. Root tuberous, slightly flattened<br />

and divided into 2 or 3 finger-like lobes. Stem 1-3 ft.<br />

high, robust, erect, hollow, leafy, throughout or in the lower<br />

portion a few sheathing scales. Leaves erect, oblong-lanceshaped,<br />

2J-6 in. long, base sheathing. Flowers about f in.<br />

long, crowded, dull purple, the lip darker spotted. Bracts<br />

green, narrowly lance-shaped, the lower much longer than the<br />

flowers, the upper slightly so or shorter. Sepals and petals<br />

nearly equal, the lateral sepals spreading, the dorsal one forming<br />

with the petals a hood. Lip turned downwards, round,<br />

obscurely 3-lobed, margins finely toothed ;<br />

spur straight,<br />

cylindric, nearly as long as the ovary.<br />

Flowers. June to August.<br />

Locality. Gulmarg, damp, grassy woods and by watercourse,<br />

above 8,500 ft., common; below the Lai Shah ki Alam,<br />

on damp ground, 10,200 ft.<br />

Distribution. W. Himalaya, 8,000-12,000 ft., eastwards<br />

to Nepal, 16,000 ft., and westwards to Afghanistan, N. Africa<br />

and Europe, N. Asia.<br />

Orchis habenarioides, King and Pantling.<br />

(Habenarioides means resembling Habenaria, another genus of<br />

Orchids.)<br />

A terrestrial herb. Tuber divided into finger-like lobes.<br />

Stems 1-lf ft. high, clothed at the base with unequal, tubular<br />

sheaths. Leaves 4 or 5, scattered, stalkless, 2-5 in. long,<br />

elliptic-oblong to linear-oblong, slightly narrowed into the<br />

rather long sheath. Spike 2-5 in. long, cylindric, denseflowered.<br />

Flowers about J in. diameter, pink or occasion-
