THE INTERPRETATION OF THE GIRL, NOVEL
„SPANYOL MENYASSZONY” BY ILDIKÓ LOVAS FROM THE
GENDER POINT OF VIEW
The aim of my essay is to present the girl, novel „Spanyol menyasszony” by Ildikó Lovas by means of the gender-method.
The experience of women can change the strategy of reading. Gynocriticism proposes a reading method which
makes us aware of sexual codes. Reading by a woman is accepting an attitude of interpretation which supposes questions
that are different from the male pattern of literary criticism. This is particularly interesting in a work which announces
the deatils of Csáth’s oeuvre. All these lead to gender, my ambition being to understand the literary characteristics
of the relation between the two sexes.
Géza Csáth was a follower of psychoanalysis, which was one of the most controversial branches of natural sciences
in the 20th century. In Freud’s theories of women, they are always passive. This can be connected with the views of
contemporary society. Probably in theory it does not lack Otto Weininger’s ideas, expressed in his work „Sex and
Character”. The two narrators of the anti-girl-novel are not able to break off from the patriarchal world’s abundance
of expectations. This way, the matter of their desire (marriage, which is believed to be ideal) becomes an abject, an
inward form of feelings like contempt, fear and disgust.
Consequently, my essay makes an attempt to explore the similarities between the narrators, to untie the dense net
of motives, to break down the female streotypes and to examine the procedure of struggle against it.
