LA MÈRE DES CHRÉTIENS ET LA REINE DE L'ÉGLISE CHAPITRE PREMIER DE L'INFLUENCE CONSTANTE DU CÉNACLE SUR LA DERNIÈRE PHASE DE LA VIE DE LA SAINTE VIERGE. I. Combien il est profitable, pour mieux comprendre la dernière phase de la vie de Marie, de la rattacher constamment au Cénacle. Rôle important de ce centre religieux dans la primitive Église. — II. Description du local situé au mont Sion, de la stlle haute, et de la maison de Jean qui formait une dépendance du Cénacle. — III. La Providence entoure ce lieu d'une protection manifeste, durant toute la vie de Marie. I On a généralement le tort de quitter trop tôt le Cénacle 1 , dans l'explication des faits de la primitive Église. On s'occupe de cette salle célèbre quand il s'agit de l'institution du grand sacrement d'amour et de la descente du Saint-Esprit; puis * Cénacle, du latin GBNARK, souper, signifie la salle où le Christ prit son dernier repas pascal, et institua la sainte Gène.
4 DE L'INFLUENCE DU CÉNACLE l'attention s'en détourne, et le Cénacle demeure solitaire comme un monument historique. C'est là non seulement une lacune, mais encore un dommage dans la compréhension de l'unité : on perd un fil conducteur. Il importe donc de déterminer, de préciser, à côté des faveurs et attributions conférées par l'Homme- Dieu et par le Saint-Esprit au Cénacle, Y usage que les Apôtres et les premiers chrétiens faisaient de ce local de grâces et d'honneur. L usage qu'en faisait aussi la Vierge Marie viendra s'y enclaver et briller, comme un saphir dans un cercle d'or. Le Cénacle est d'abord, pour le petit troupeau du Christ, un lieu de prières et de retraite. N'étaitce pas là que le Sauveur avait lavé les pieds à ses apôtres? là qu'il avait institué le très saint sacrement de l'Eucharistie et le sacerdoce?là aussi qu'il avait tenu les sublimes discours que Jean devait recueillir dans son Evangile? là qu'il avait promis la venue du Consolateur? là enfin que, le soir même de sa résurrection, il avait apparu à Pierre et à la famille apostolique, et que, huit jours après, il avait fait toucher ses plaies au disciple en retard? Que de souvenirs précieux réunis dans cette demeure du mont Sion, hier encore ignorée ! Aussi, lorsque dans la soirée du jour où le Seigneur montant au ciel s'est dérobé à leurs regards, les apôtres rentrent à Jérusalem pour s enfermer dans un lieu de retraite et de prières, ils vont droit au Cénacle.
