thicker or more profound tumors. We first synthesized t<strong>et</strong>ra-carboxyphenylporphyrin and<br />

trans-bis(mesityl)-bis(carboxyphenyl)porphyrin each one bearing spermidine or spermine<br />

units. Then we performed the synthesis of the corresponding chlorins by reduction of one<br />

pyrrolic double bond. We finally synthesized trimers composed of three porphyrin or two<br />

porphyrin and one chlorin units. All of these compounds were characterized by UV-visible<br />

spectroscopy, MALDI mass spectrom<strong>et</strong>ry and 1 H NMR and have been shown to generate<br />

singl<strong>et</strong> oxygen upon irradiation with visible light. A preliminary physico-chemical study has<br />

been undertaken in order to appreciate the complexation of these molecules with DNA and<br />

the ensuing visible light-induced photocleavage; results obtained indicate that these molecules<br />

could be promising for their use in photodynamic therapy.<br />
