The Federal Office for Migration was established on 1 January 2005, as a result of a merger between the Federal Office for Refugees (FOR) and the Federal Office for Immigration, Integration and Emigration (IMES). It regulates all matters arising under the laws concerning foreign nationals and asylumseekers in Switzerland: entry and residence, labour, protection against persecution, integration, naturalization, emigration, and returning abroad.
