En la época colonial, el Grande Hotel de Beira era el mayor hotel de Mozambique: 350 habitaciones, suites
lujosas, una piscina olímpica… Actualmente, el edificio ruinoso, sin agua ni corriente eléctrica, alberga a 3.500
personas. Algunos llevan 20 años viviendo allí. Además de las habitaciones, también las antesalas, los pasillos,
las zonas de servicio y los sótanos (donde siempre es de noche) han sido convertidos en habitáculos.
In the colonial era the Grande Hotel in the city of Beira was
the largest in Mozambique: 350 rooms, luxurious suites,
Olympic-sized swimming pool… At present the building, in
ruins, with no electricity or running water, is inhabited by
3,500 people. Some have been living there for twenty years.
In addition to the rooms, the foyers, corridors, service areas
and basement of the hotel (where it’s always dark) have been
turned into rooms.
A l’époque coloniale le Grande Hotel de la ville de Beira était
le plus grand hôtel du Mozambique : 350 chambres, des suites
luxueuses, piscine olympique… Désormais l’édifice, en
ruines, sans électricité ni eau courante, est habité par 3.500
personnes. Certains vivent ici depuis vingt ans. En plus des
chambres, les antichambres, couloirs, aires de service et le
sous-sol de l’hôtel – où il fait toujours sombre – servent également
d’habitation.
