Renal sonography is a non invasive, cheap, easily repeatable investigation.
The sensitivity of renal ultrasound in detecting renal disorders is high. It is the
most appropriate investigation for the detection of urinary tract dilation.
In patients with LUTS/BPH the upper urinary tract involvement rate is 3%, but
the rate increases up to 24% in the event of urinary retention
The accuracy of transrectal ultrasonography in the assessment of prostate volume
is not significantly higher than that of suprapubic ultrasonography
The accuracy of transrectal sonography in the assessment of the morphology and
structure of the prostate is significantly higher than suprapubic sonography
Intravenous pyelography has not use by patients with uncomplicated LUTS/
BPH
In patients presenting with hematuria the CT scan provides more information
on the urinary tract than intravenous pyelography
In patients with hematuria cystoscopy can provide more information on the
lower urinary tract than intravenous pyelography
Renal ultrasonography is not indicated in the routine assessment of patients with
LUTS/BPH
Renal ultrasonography is indicated if involvement of the upper urinary tract is
suspected or in case of hypertension not previously diagnosed
Transrectal ultrasonography can be performed in preparation for minimally
invasive treatments in patients with LUTS/BPH, provided that prostate cancer is
not suspected
Urography is not indicated for the routine assessment of patients presenting with
LUTS/BPH
