Interstitial or contact laser may be proposed to motivated patients who wish to
undergo alternative treatment
Contact laser may be proposed to patients with obstruction with major
coagulation disorders
TUMT may be proposed to patients who prefer to avoid surgery and who do not
respond and/or do not tolerate medical therapy
TUMT is contraindicated in patients with prostate volume < 30 ml
The evaluation of post-void residual urine is important in the first phase of the
follow-up after TUMT to exclude the presence of urinary retention.
The follow up after TUMT should be carried out at 1, 3 ,6 months and
thereafter every year
TUNA may be proposed to patients who prefer to avoid surgery and who do not
respond and/or do not tolerate medical therapy
In the absence of complications follow-up examinations after TUNA should be
carried out every 6 months and thereafter every year
Prostatic stents may be proposed only to patients with high surgical risk, with an
indwelling catheter or with symptomatic obstruction
HIFU is not recommended for the treatment of LUTS/BPH in clinical practice
WIT may be proposed to patients with a high surgical risk, with an indwelling
catheter or with symptomatic obstruction

There is a linear correlation between the risk of ED and the severity of LUTS.
The risk increases in smokers and in the presence of heart and lung diseases.
The degree of sexual satisfaction is related to LUTS and prostate volume.
