Slant column densities (SCD) of OClO are derived from UV/vis absorption
measurements made by the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment
(GOME). Because of the good temporal and spatial resolution,
GOME observations are well suited for the continuous monitoring of the
stratospheric chlorine activation.
Here we present OClO-SCDs for the Arctic winter 2001/02. Due to
an early cooling of the stratosphere in mid-November, strongly enhanced
OClO values are found already at the beginning of December. In the
mid of December, stratospheric temperature minima at the level of Tpot
= 475 K drop below 190 K and lead to an increasing chlorine activation
with OClO-SCDs above 1.3*10e14 molec/cm 2 .
We present SCDs of OClO for the period from November 2001 till
April 2002 and discuss these observations with respect to the resulting
stratospheric ozone depletion. We compare these findings to GOME
OClO-observations of six previous arctic winters (1995/96 to 2000/01).
The algorithms developed at the IUP allow us to extract vertical column
densities of trace gas species from GOME data. One important
species is BrO. It is responsible for the tropospheric polar ozone hole
that is encountered during polar spring. It may also alter the oxidising
capacity of the troposphere.
Sources of BrO are mainly the sea salt at high latitudes but also, as
will be shown here, at mid latitudes there is a contribution of salt lakes.
In this study we will focus on increased BrO abundances at bay areas at
high latitudes, where we will show a comparison of GOME data to ground
based measurements at the Hudson Bay. In addition we will present first
results on the occurrence of increased BrO columns at South America,
where many salt lakes can be found at the Andes.
Global measurements of ozone profiles by the satellite instruments
Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment and Stratospheric
Aerosol and Gas Experiment II: Intercomparisons considering
dynamical aspects — •Astrid Bracher, Mark Weber, Klaus
Stratospheric ozone profiles measured by the Global Ozone Monitoring
Experiment (GOME on ERS-2, data version 50.70) and Stratospheric
Aerosol and Gas Experiment II (SAGE II, data version 6.10) were compared
over the entire GOME operation period between 1995 and 2001.
GOME measures the reflected and backscattered radiation from earth
and vertical profiles are derived from nadir observations using the Full
Retrieval Method (FURM) which is based upon an advanced Optimal
Estimation inversion scheme; SAGE II uses solar occultation to measure
vertical profiles of ozone with an instantaneous vertical field of view of
1.6 km at the Earth limb. Using coincident measurements are identified
by limiting time difference and distance between two data sets. For long
lived substances, like ozone in the lower stratosphere, gradients in their
horizontal distribution evolve from transport processes; thus validation
at the border of different air masses is rendered more difficult. Origin of
air masses can be determined by looking at the potential vorticity (PV)
distribution at 46 hPa. Additional criteria apart from spatial and temporal
coincidences an upper limit for the difference in PV between SAGEII
and GOME are imposed. Instead of comparing zonal means, a presentation
in the equivalent latitude system was found to be advantageous.
Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) is an important trace species in the atmosphere,
both under background conditions and in polluted areas. It is released
to the troposphere mainly by fossil fuel combustion, volcanic emissions
and oxidation of organic material in soils as well as biogenic emissions
over the oceans (DMS, H2S).
The Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) on ERS-2 is a
UV/vis spectrometer observing earth in nadir view in the spectral range
of 280 - 790 nm with a spectral resolution of 0.2 – 0.4 nm. From the
GOME measurements, SO2 columns can be determined on a near global
scale, providing a unique opportunity to monitor both volcanic erruptions
and strong pollution events from space.
In this presentation, the retrieval of SO2 from GOME measurements
is described and the achievable sensitivity as well as a number of error
sources are discussed. Finally, results from case studies on volcanic
erruptions and smog episodes are presented.
Gemessene und modellierte Werte des stratosphärischen NO2/HNO3-
Verhältnisses werden für unterschiedliche geophysikalische Bedingungen
verglichen.
