to measure in zenith sky and off-axis geometry to distinguish between
stratospheric and tropospheric amounts of the measured species.
The proposed measurement locations of BREDOM and the realisation
of the new tropical stations in Nairobi/Kenya and Merida/Venezuela are
described. In addition, results of the existing BREDOM stations in Bremen
and Ny-˚Alesund are presented with a focus on the possibilities of
the off-axis measurements.
Multi-AXis-(MAX) DOAS Measurements of NO2 during
the BAB II Motorway Emission Campaign — •Christoph v.
Multi-Axis-DOAS measurements, based upon the renowned DOAS
technique (Platt, 1994) provide a methodology to resolve spatial distributions
of various trace gases using scattered light from the sun or other
non-artificial sources. Two basic techniques can be used: one telescope
trained in different directions sequentially by means of a mechanical motor
drive, or several telescopes directing their light onto a two-dimensional
CCD-Chip which allows for simultaneous measurements in several directions.
As part of the IUP Heidelberg tomography group’s contribution to the
BAB II campaign in April and May 2001, a CCD based MAX DOAS
apparatus with ten telescopes was placed near the A 656 motorway. It
measured the NO2 Slant Column Densities using scattered sunlight with
a time resolution of 1 minute. Three telescopes were directed across the
motorway, and three parallel to it. Because of this geometry, the data
can be compared to the SCD derived from the long path DOAS measurements
performed during the campaign [Mettendorf et al. 2002, this
issue]. The setup allowed for the tracking of the diurnal variation of a
motorway plume, the assessment of the vertical structure as well as the
comparison with the plume outreach of Heidelberg.
Reconstruction of motorway emission plumes by Long-Path-
DOAS Tomography — •Kai Uwe Mettendorf, Pinhua Xie,
We present here the geometrical setup and results from the first tomographic
long-path DOAS experiment taking place in April/May 2001
next to a motorway. The setup includes two coaxial telescopes emitting
light onto 8 retro reflecting arrays along and across the motorway. The
arrays are mounted on two cranes positioned on both sides of the motorway
800 meters away from the telescopes. On each crane four arrays are
placed at different altitudes: 10, 20, 30, and 40 meters. They are scanned
successively by the telescopes, providing up to16 light paths. Slant
column density results and reconstructed 1-2 dimensional concentration
maps of the NO2 and SO2 emission plumes will be shown for different
conditions.
During the Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS) 2000 ambient air samples
were analyzed on-board the NSF/NCAR ELECTRA research aircraft
by two VOC measurement techniques: 1) an in-situ gas chromatograph
named TACOH (Tropospheric Airborne Chromatograph for Oxyhydrocarbons
and Hydrocarbons), operated by NOAA’s Aeronomy Laboratory,
and 2) a chemical ionization mass spectrometer named PTR-MS
(Proton-Transfer-Reaction Mass Spectrometer) and operated by the University
of Innsbruck. The sample protocols were quite different for the
two methods: the TACOH system collected air samples for 15-60 sec
(depending upon altitude) every 15 min, the PTR-MS system monitored
selected VOCs on a time-shared basis for 2 sec respectively, once every
4-20 sec, depending upon the number of monitored species. Simultaneous
measurements of acetaldehyde, isoprene, the sum* of acetone and
propanal, the sum* of methyl vinyl ketone and methacrolein (* PTR-MS
does not distinguish between isobaric species) and toluene show good
agreement despite being performed in the complex and highly polluted
Houston air matrix.
In Niger ergeben Edelgastemperaturen,
