The “Gamma Ray Astronomy at ALmería” (GRAAL) experiment uses
63heliostat-mirrors with a total mirror area of ≈ 2500 m 2 from the
CESA-1 field to collect Cherenkov light from airshowers. The detector
is located in a central solar tower and detects photon-induced showers
with an energy threshold of 250 ± 110 GeV and an asymptotic effective
detection area of about 15000 m 2 .
Data sets taken in the period September 1999-March 2001 in the direction
of the Crab pulsar and other candidates for γ-ray sources were
analysed for high-energy γ-ray emission. Evidence for γ-ray flux from
the Crab pulsar with a significance of 4.5 σ in a total (usable) observing
time of 7 hours and 10 minutes on source was found.
The effect of field-of-view restricted to the central part of a detected
airshower on the lateral distribution and timing properties of Cherenkov
light and their effect on an efficient γ-hadron separation are discussed.
TeV-Gamma-Emission von dem Blazar H 1426+428 und die
kosmische Infrarot-Hintergrundstrahlung — •G. Pühlhofer
für die HEGRA-Kollaboration — Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik,
Saupfercheckweg 1, D-69117 Heidelberg
Probing IR Background by e ± Pair Halos — •Anant Eungwanichayapant
— Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, D-69029 Heidelberg,
Germany
Amodelofe ± pair halos and the first results from a Monte Carlo simulation
of this model are presented. A large number of e ± pairs are produced
by electromagnetic cascades initiated by very high energy gamma
photons from AGNs (Eγ ≥ 10 13 eV) interacting with intergalactic radiation
fields such as the 2.7 K microwave background radiation (MBR) and
infrared (IR) background photon field. If intergalactic magnetic fields are
strong enough (B >10 −9 G) the e ± s are immediately isotropized and
trapped in a certain region. Therefore the e ± pairs will form a huge halo
(R ≈ 10 Mpc) around the AGNs and produce a flux of gamma photons
(Eγ > 10 11 eV) potentially visible for next-generation ground based
Cherenkov telescopes. The energy spectrum and angular distribution of
the gamma rays of the halo can be used to probe the spectrum of IR
background at different redshift.
High zenith angle observations of SN1006 with HEGRA CT1
imaging air Cherenkov telescope — •Vincenzo Vitale —Max-
Planck Institute for Physics Muenchen
The imaging air Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) can observe emission
of gamma rays at 100’s of GeV-TeV energies. With these telescopes one
is detecting the Cherenkov light component produced by secondary particles
in extensive air showers initiated by primary gammas or hadrons.
In 1996-97 the CANGAROO telescope, located in southern hemisphere
has measured TeV gamma rays from the shell-type Supernova remnant
SN1006.
The IACTs in the Northern hemisphere can observe the SN1006 only
at very large zenith angles. The energy threshold of IACTs increases
with zenith angle and also the gamma/hadrons separation, needed for
the signal identification, is becoming more difficult.
The HEGRA CT1 telescope, located on Canary island La Palma has
performed observations of SN1006 during 1999, 2000, 2001. A preliminary
analysis will be presented.
Search for extended muon showers underground and for coincidences
of EAS with Gamma Ray Bursts — •Arif Mailov
for the COSMOALEPH , L3collaboration — Emmy Noether Campus,
Walter-Flex-Str. 3, D-57068, Siegen
Muon coincidences over large distances (several km) are searched for
between the COSMOALEPH and L3experiments by comparing the event
time stamps measured with the Global Positionning System. We also report
here the results of a search for high energy muons associated with
Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) registered in the year 2000 by ULYSSES,
KONUS and NEAR monitors on board of spacecrafts.
z = 0.017 (NGC0315) bis z = 0.272 (3C-197.1). Zwei der hier vorgestellten
